RETAINING WALLS & FENCES · NORTH COUNTY SAN DIEGO

A little structure. A little more privacy.

Walls and fencing help define a yard, manage changes in level and create a sense of enclosure. The right approach starts with the purpose of the structure and the conditions around it.

Be clear about what the structure needs to do

A garden edge, a retaining wall and a privacy fence serve different purposes. Describe whether the goal is to hold soil, create a boundary, screen a view or connect to an existing feature. That distinction guides the site review and the questions that need to be answered.

Consider the whole boundary

Gates, paths, neighboring grades, drainage and planting should be considered together. Materials and proportions also affect the feeling of the space. A fence or wall can provide a clean backdrop for planting while keeping access practical.

Resolve requirements before construction

Property boundaries, underground services, structural needs, HOA requirements and permit questions must be addressed for the specific project. Retaining structures may need professional design or engineering. The construction scope should reflect those requirements rather than treating every wall or fence as a standard detail.

A few questions, answered.

Can a fence sit above a retaining wall?

That depends on the structure, height, loads, site conditions and applicable requirements. Share existing plans and photos so the right review can be identified. A visual concept does not establish structural suitability.

Can you match an existing wall or fence?

We can discuss the existing materials and the look you want. Availability and site conditions will affect whether a close match, a complementary finish or a broader replacement makes sense.
